My departure on Tuesday is fast approaching, and I’ve been busy tying off loose ends. One of these, as it turns out, is amassing a small stockpile of _gear_. Gear is a word that nourishes my manly spirit, and it covers everything from tools to luggage to clothing.
I’m following a packing strategy of trying to anticipate what I’ll need for the whole year and bring it with me rather than try to shop for it in Lviv. This means my list includes all the following categories:
- Casual gear
- Formal gear
- Cold weather gear
- Swimming gear (y’know, trunks and towel)
- Travel gear
- Reading gear
- Electronic gear
- Martial arts gear
Martial arts gear is just going to be my belt and uniform. I’m hoping to find a dojo/gym to train at, and if it’s any kind of traditional martial arts school, it would be cool to have my native uniform along for the ride. Swimming gear is simple: trunks and towel. Reading gear: A few essential books.
Travel gear has been the most interesting category. I’m anticipating having enough time during academic breaks to do some backpacking/travel around Europe, and so I’ve picked up a few things to aid and abet that, including a neat water bottle that rolls up when not in use and an all-purposes outlet adapter.
And I definitely don’t want to be caught without a couple good pairs of all-American blue jeans.
